The terms vegetarian and vegan do sound similar. No wonder many people mistakenly interpret that vegetarian is vegan, even though the two are different things.

Vegetarians are people who only stop eating meat. On the other hand vegans are people who do not consume all animal products in total. That is, vegans not only stop consuming meat, but also other products of animal origin, such as eggs, cheese and milk.

The vegetarian lifestyle has existed since 700 BC. Its appearance is allegedly due to the emergence of public awareness of the importance of maintaining health. It is also because of the existence of certain religious or ethnic customs that abstain from meat consumption.

Vegetarians can also be divided into several types, depending on the type of food intake consumed.

For example, just Lacto ovo. Lacto ovo is a vegetarian who avoids consumption of all animal meat, but still consumes milk and egg based products. Then there is lacto vegetarian, which is a vegetarian who avoids consumption of animal meat and eggs but still consumes dairy products. While ovo vegetarian is a vegetarian who avoids consumption of all processed meat products, except eggs.

Semi-Vegetarian

In addition there are other types of vegetarians, namely vegetarian pescatarian and flexitarian or also known as semi-vegetarian.

Over time, the vegetarian lifestyle has become an increasingly positive trend. Since 2016 the Supporting Society for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the largest animal rights advocacy group in the world, has been actively campaigning for vegetarian and vegan lifestyles on social media with the hashtag #TheYearofVegan.

Even in recent years, the keywords vegetarian and vegan on the internet have jumped quite sharply.

Quoting from the official website of PETA, in the United States, 36 percent of people prefer alternative dairy products, and as much as 41 percent of US people reduce their meat consumption in the last 12 months of 2015.

A study conducted by the Hartman Group also found that 12 percent of millennials with good idnplay poker skills said that they would become vegetarians. No wonder the trend to become a vegetarian increasingly widespread in recent years.

While vegan is a way of life that seeks to avoid all forms of exploitation of animals. This including consuming all animal meat and processed animal products. While you are a vegan, you should avoid various food products ranging from gelatin, honey, albumin, and some forms of vitamin D3.

What needs to be underlined from vegetarians and vegans is if vegetarians oppose killing animals to eat but still consume various processed animal products. Whereas a vegan has a belief that animals have the right to be free so that humans are not processed for food or clothing.

If judging in terms of health, both have health benefits. Living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle can help lower cholesterol in the blood. It also reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, increase the life expectancy longer than people who consume meat. A vegetarian or vegan lifestyle also helps you lose weight, thereby reducing the chance of developing diabetes.
